Accent
Otherwise known as embellishments used to enhance a scrapbook layout or project or accentuate a certain element on your page. Many pre-made accents are available such as flowers, stickers, chipboard shapes, ribbon and much more.

Accordian Album
An album which has no binding in the middle and each end page is adhered to a cover, causing it to open out like an accordion.

|
|
Acetate
Acetate is a strong, translucent film that can be clear or printed. It is used to create templates or as an overlay used on scrapbook layouts.

|
|
Acid-free
This is vital in scrapbooking as acids speed up the deterioration of your photos and paper. To be considered acid-free materials must have a ph of 7.0 or higher. It is during manufacturing that the acid is removed.

|
|
|
Acid Migration
The transfer of acid from one source to another on your page. Placing acidic elements on a page can pass the acid from your source to your photo unless steps to isolate the item and prevent this.

|
|
|
Acrylic Paint
A synthetic paint which is water-based and quick-drying. Has many uses in scrapbooking and many effects can be created through stamping, texturising, dry brushing, using to alter colours and textures of page elements.

|
Adhesive
The medium used to secure photos, paper, embellishments or other elements to your page or project. There are many different types of adhesive available. Some examples are tapes, glues, adhesive dots, dimensional tape and spray adhesive. Look out for photo-safe and acid-free adhesives for scrapbooking.

|
Ageing
Techniques used to give cardstock, paper, embellishments and photos an aged, antiqued or distressed appearance. Methods include inking, sanding, crumpling, dry brushing and staining.

|
|
Albums
Used for storing and displaying your layouts and scrapbook pages. Albums generally come with a number of protective plastic sleeves, with the choice of inserting your pages from the top (top-loading album) or the side (side-loading album).
The most common album size for scrapbooking is 12” x 12” (30.5 x 30.5 cm). Other formats include:

• 8” x 8” (20.5 x 20.5 cm)
• 9” x 9” (23 x 23 cm) and

Altered
When the appearance of an item is transformed. The item could be anything, such as cardstock, chipboard letters and shapes, and buttons and may be altered with products such as paints, inks, patterned paper and other craft items and materials. The end result is a unique item that matches your project may be perfectly coordinated in matching colours and paper.

Ancestry
Ancestry refers to a person's ethnic origin or descent, "roots," or heritage, or the place of birth of the person or the person's parents or ancestors.

Artificially aging the appearance of an item.

|
Archival quality
A term used to describe materials where their acidic and buffered content is within safe levels, and such materials have undergone laboratory analysis to determine this. You may see this on photo storage boxes or art paper.
